There are many of us who strive to promote literacy and reading year-round, but it is beneficial to set aside time to have a specific focus. I'd like to know how everyone feels about making Teen Read…Continue

Jenni Kitchen replied to Justin C Switzer's discussion [TRW 2017] How do you get teens to unleash their stories?
"This year I truly enjoyed the theme for TRW. I facilitated a 3 day (2 hrs a day in the afternoon) Creative Workshop.  I shared some of the basics of writing and the importance of our own stories and let the teens decide what to work on.  I…"

Dorothy Allen replied to Justin C Switzer's discussion [TRW 2017] How do you get teens to unleash their stories?
"I loved this year's theme. I did hand out the book mark as it is perfect for this theme. I had success with the six word memoir. One teacher starts with a paragraph, narrows it to a tweet, and then to the six word memoir. I got the idea from a…"

"I would like to see a transition to Teen Read Month as well!  Our students look forward to the extra activities and reading promotions and then due to time restraints come at the end and are disappointed it is almost over.  I actually had…"

"I like this idea, but I feel like YALSA gives very little support to librarians in coming up with programming and other ideas related to each year's theme. In speaking with other librarians, I don't feel like I'm alone. Each year, I…"

"One of my English teachers suggested that the homerooms build a story round-robin fashion. One homeroom starts the story, than after a set amount of time the next homeroom picks up writing where the first left off until we get to the 20th or last…"

"I'm in the same boat - fall break has fallen during TRW the past 2 years so I don't fully like I can truly celebrate it. With a whole month, I would be able to do much more programming!"

"I would like to have it as a Teen Read Month. We have a fall break in October, and it is always the same week as Teen Read Week. I have to move it either before or after fall break. If it was a month, then I could promote it all month and not feel…"

There are many of us who strive to promote literacy and reading year-round, but it is beneficial to set aside time to have a specific focus. I'd like to know how everyone feels about making Teen Read Week into Teen Read Month. Would that take away from the whole experience? Would it improve efforts in teen literacy? I'd like your opinion on it. See More

"I found these awesome bookmarks either from the ALA store or from Demco.  If you can't get your hands on the bookmarks, you can make your own and use the topics from the back of it to spark some writing ideas with teens."

[TRW 2017] What author would your teens mostly likely want to meet?

The best way to get young people to read is by making the situation real for them. If they see themselves in the characters, they will likely be more interested in the story. Same goes with being able to have a conversation with the author. Having hosted events at my library where authors spoke with the young people, I was given the opportunity to experience the joy and enthusiasm about reading only meeting someone you look up to, you aspire to be can achieve. Most notably was Wes Moore. He was…See More

[TRW 2017] How do you get teen's to unleash their stories?

With Summer Learning over and TRW 2017 upon us, I'd like to hear some of your ideas on how you get the young people at your library to share their stories, promote literacy, and improve their writing skills. I know library staff across the country are planning on having some wonderful programs to support this year's TRW, and I'd just like to see what everyone is doing. This would be a great way for those who are new to TRW or have thought about programming around it to gather some ideas that…See More

Teen Read Week: Board Game Collection Encourages English Language Learners To “Read For the Fun of It”

Every year the Teen Read Week Committee selects the recipients of the Teen Read Week grants funded by contributions from YALSA and Dollar General.   Cynthia Shutts at the White Oak Public Library (IL) was awarded one of this year’s Teen Read Week grants to create a circulating board game collection… Continue reading

Reaching Teens through Passive Programs

Do you have trouble getting teens into your interactive programs for your teens during Teen Read Week? Are you still trying to understand your teen demographic? Teens are busy students, especially during their final high school years, but they can certainly still participate in other planned activities on their own… Continue reading
